Combining agricultural and livestock residues with biochar or compost could help recycle nutrients and improve soil quality. Early greenhouse tests with barley showed that some mixtures reduced problems linked to excess salts and trace metals, while biochar increased soil carbon. However, results varied between soils, and some treatments hindered seed germination and plant growth. The findings highlight the potential of tailored mixtures, alongside the importance of matching each treatment to the soil before wider use in the field.
